The most obvious one that hits me is catholics. From a very young age I was groomed to hate catholics by my Dad. He would talk endlessly about home rule, how the irish were to blame for this and that. Oh dont get me started on the orange order. My dad was in that. Then the Rangers football stuff. But yes, he raised me to think they were a subspeices and to never be trusted or talked to.
18. Went to uni, made friends with Johnny. Johnny is a catholic. I should hate him but why do I talk to him, play football with him and everything else. Turns out my dad is a bigot and it took a year or so to stop all the negative voices but I realised that he was wrong. There are good people and bad people in all walks of life, not just “them”.
The more I think about it, my dad really shouldn’t have been a parent.
