QOTD – Computer!

Daily writing prompt
Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?

Very hard question to answer, I mean I have a lot of things that I used to tinker with but nione really stands out. Aha I an idea, if i focus on one year and answer it that way.

I take you now on a journey to 1999, 17, in college awaiting going to university. Going to the local pub on lunch break, it was great. We had LAN parties where 8 of us played all the classics; quake UT, CS and C&C. We did the play all night and then out by 8 am. I had my freedom for the first time, I had a motorbike and spend hours exploring all the roads in the local area. We lived in a rural place so lots of hills and green stuff.

So I think my answer would be the computer, I could sit there and play lan games but also programming was a big part of those years, fluent now and try and use it every day, even if its a little script.

The runner up prize goes to my motorbike. Granted I had one since i was 13. No police in the countryside. But when I got my license at 16 I just felt better knowing I could go to college and not get caught for no insurance etc.

  1. We must be roughly the same age. I started building my own PCs in the 90s; paid for by my father, so they were often faaaar from high end. That’s probably why I go a bit overboard these days when building one. I didn’t have friends who gamed so I never got to experience LAN parties.

    • We are all in the level 40’s. 🤣 Brian, we have to resolve this lack of LAN party experience you have somehow! Especially for a fellow rig builder! Nah, I feel like you would totally enjoy the vacation of gamer heaven brotherhood. Do you have any gamer friend now?

        • Ah time….that elusive resource we can never find enough of…but are also unable to gather or store. I lack the friends to play with. Never heard of New World and play mostly isolationist games now…like Banished.
